Important Action in tub U. S. Court. The suit against Col. R M. Douglas, recently decided in his favor in the U. S. Circuit Court here, was brought by the United States upon his official bond for damages resulting from the alleged loss of lour thousond gallons of whiskey in iSSo, from the distillery warehouse of W. II. Winstead in Person county. It was admitted that marshal Douglas personally was in no way to blame ; but the Government contend "J that the loss occurred through the negligence of his Deputy, for whose sets and omissions the Marshal's bond was responsible. This was denied by the defendents, and the verdict of tbe Jury sustained them. . Indeed, so clearly, were the facts in favor of Col. Douglas that he intro duced no witnesses whatever, al though be had several in attendance ; and the case was decided in his layer solely on the testimony offered by the Government;:) " "," ' Meeting of - City Commissioners ?
